5 Things That University Has Taught Me
I have absolutely loved my first year at university and I honestly cannot wait to be back in Birmingham to start the second year of my course in September.
So, having passed (and more) my first year, I thought I would share with you some of the key things that I have learnt as a 'fresher'.
1. No-one really cares what you're wearing. I worried so much about this, about what I was going to wear for lectures every day but honestly, there was no need as no-one really cares. You see people in all sorts of outfits on their way to lectures: tracksuits, jeans, dresses, trainers, high heels and not a single person even bats an eyelid. I was worried over absolutely nothing!
2. Hard work is so worth it. If I'm honest, I did not do enough work during my A Levels and I was a little concerned that, at university, I would not have the motivation to work as hard as I should. But actually, I did myself pretty proud! I think revising in groups, and in different places (which I wrote about here) really helped me and so did setting myself realistic revision timetables.
3. Naps are so necessary. Napping saved me during freshers week - I napped every single afternoon so that I wouldn't be too tired the next day after each night out. I still nap now before I go out, as I cannot deal with being over-tired! I can also sleep in a lot later now than I used to be able to, which is pretty useful when your neighbours in accommodation are ridiculously loud!
4. Just say yes. I was really really nervous before I went to uni, that I wouldn't make friends or fit in, but actually it is so easy to meet new people if you are open to trying things. I've been on an LGBT bar crawl, tried dance aerobics and thoroughly enjoyed a few silent discos! This past year I have had the time of my life and I really do think it all comes down to having an open mind.
5. There are no problems that ice cream and wine cannot solve. University is stressful; you will get homesick and you will feel completely bogged down by essays, revision and exams. But, for me, a good movie and a night in with friends, fuelled by ice cream and a bottle of rosé, fixes it all. Once you've gotten all your worries off of your chest, they don't seem anywhere near as bog or scary. After all, a problem shared is a problem halved, right?
What life lessons have you learnt recently?

I'm glad you seemed to have a good first year. I definitely agree that you should just say yes and put yourself out there. I feel like I held myself back at times in first year and there's so much that I wish I did that I decided not to do at the time.

Thank you, I really loved it which surprised me as I wasn't expecting to!
DeleteAw this post is so lovely! You're right that no one cares what people wear. I used to worry about this all the time but now I rock up in the scruffiest outfits with no make up on at all. Life. xx

Thank you! I know right, I concentrate so much better when I'm comfy too x
DeleteHaze,
ReplyDeleteI love this post, I relate to it even as a Junior in college. I think it's important for people to remember that these years are for trial and error, we're not meant to follow a specific plan or be "perfect". Mistakes do not define us, the help us learn and grow. That was something that I really had to learn as a freshman.
